Red Herring Productions is thrilled to announce their follow-up to last fall’s popular and acclaimed production of “Assassins”: an original work entitled “Thicker Than Water” that will have its World Premiere in the Vern Riffe Center’s Studio Two in Columbus, Ohio from August 7 through August 16, 2014.

“Thicker Than Water” is an original work that explores one night in the lives of a father and son. One conversation, maybe the most important one they have ever had. Maybe their last chance. Will they put the sins of the past behind them and reconnect before it’s too late?

The play is being created collaboratively in rehearsal using techniques developed and popularized by British stage and film director Mike Leigh, by actors Michael Garrett Herring and Nick Lingnofski and director John Dranschak.

All three collaborators are serving as co-writers in addition to their roles as performers and director, respectively. Within the process, characters are developed collaboratively through discussion, writing, and improvisation, then brought together in scenes improvised in rehearsal, with the ultimate outcome being a fully scripted work upon opening.

“I have been fascinated by the process developed by Mike Leigh since my experience with it as an actor over a decade ago in BlueForms’ production of ‘Beat About The Bush’,” said Dranschak. “We’d been looking for a while for a production for Michael, Nick, and me to collaborate on, and this seemed like a perfect fit.”

Additionally, the production returns the new iteration of Red Herring to an old home: the Studio Two in the Riffe Center was the home of Red Herring Theatre Company from 1996-1998, after Herring relocated and expanded the company from the Milo Arts Center. Dranschak saw the company’s first shows in the space and quickly became a collaborator. Both recall the Studio Two fondly, with Herring saying, “In some ways, it will always be our home.”

With a continuing nod to our pioneering friends at Available Light Theatre, Red Herring believes in making live performance accessible to all who are interested, regardless of their means. All previously unsold tickets are available as Pay-What-You-Want tickets at the door for each performance.

The Box Office will open ONE HOUR prior to each performance, in the lobby of the Studio Theaters on the 4th floor of the Vern Riffe Center. Cash, check, or charge.
