Matt’s Letter to Jack
Written by Michael Garrett Herring

Dear Jack,
I want you to know that I have forgiven you for exposing our family secrets to the world and using us to satisfy your own blind ambition. You always wanted to be famous and now you are. I hope you enjoy it. I also want you to know that even though I have forgiven you I will never be able to trust you. You told the world that I stuck a pistol in my mouth and that I had prostate cancer. Worse yet, you mocked my faith and the way me and Angie were handling my illness. Despite your scoffs, or maybe because of them, the Lord God has healed me and blessed me with a son, a brother you will never know. Angie and I have decided to name him John, the formal version of Jack, in honor of our dead son, you. You are dead to us until you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. This decision breaks my heart. I know now that nothing is more painful than to severe a relationship with a child. I feel like Abraham when God commanded that he sacrifice his only son Isaac, and like Abraham I must obey the command, no matter how much it grieves me. You are constantly in my prayers. Every time I look to heaven I beg God, with tears in my eyes, to remove the scales that are blinding you and reveal his divine light the way he did to Saul on the road to Damascus. Until then, you are no longer welcome in our home. Please turn to Jesus.
With all my love,
